There’s one thing we know for sure: Paul Feig is currently directing a new Ghostbusters movie right now that stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon as the new foursome starting a business that hunts ghosts in New York City. Everything else about Ghostbusters is increasingly unclear as Sony perilously readies its first attempt at reviving the franchise. Last March, the two people most invested in new Ghostbusters films, Ivan Reitman (director of the original two) and Dan Aykroyd (co-writer of the original two), announced that they would be building a Ghostbusters franchise after it was clear that Ghostbusters 3 wasn’t going to happen without Bill Murray and Harold Ramis. Specifically, Reitman said: “We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.” In a world where the competition is superhero film slates that have already staked out release dates in the 2020s, it has to be tempting to do what Paramount is doing with the Transformers franchise and rapidly produce as many Ghostbusters stories as possible. That seemed to be what was happening with this second Ghostbusters movie as we heard a series of rumors that Channing Tatum would lead a second “all-male” team. Turns out that “all-male” was a phrase first used by the website Deadline Hollywood Daily as a way to differentiate the movie from Feig’s production which had entered the public eye during last year’s hack of Sony Pictures. Drew Pearce, who was assigned to write a new Ghostbusters by Reitman last March, also did some work on this weekend’s Paramount release Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation and has been available for interviews. Pearce has been answering Ghostbusters questions, claiming that he’s written a whole story bible for this second Ghostbusters project and saying that his Ghostbusters team would be mixed-gender, not limited to all-male or all-female. Between the announcement of the second Ghostbusters movie in March and Pearce’s comments about it this week, both rumored actors for the film (Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt) have denied any direct involvement in the franchise and Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters movie actually started shooting in Massachusetts for a July release next year. The internet seems as split on the idea of an all-female Ghostbusters team as they ever were, but Feig’s official Twitter TWTR -3.33% account revealed the new designs for the team as well as their equipment and the new Ecto-1 car. Pearce’s sudden revelation that his Ghostbusters story could serve as a bridge between Feig’s incarnation and the original movie’s team is a tantalizing possibility, albeit from an unexpected source. Feig’s movie is the one in production and Sony is mostly entrusting the franchise to Reitman and Dan Aykroyd instead of a stable of writers.
